Huawei has integrated the digital yuan (e-CNY) into its HarmonyOS NEXT operating system, which is used by over a billion people. Now, users do not need a separate app to work with e-CNY, as access to the central bank digital currency (CBDC) is embedded directly in the system. HarmonyOS NEXT also employs AI technology and smart contracts for secure, instant payments, enhancing system functionality and making digital transactions more convenient for daily use.

Integration of AI and IoT in e-CNY Management

With this new system, e-CNY can interact with IoT devices, allowing users to manage payments through smart devices. Huawei plans to refine this feature, making the digital currency even more accessible and user-friendly for everyday transactions. China is showcasing the potential of digital currency as a secure payment tool, setting an example for other nations.

Monitoring Capabilities and Privacy Concerns

At an event in Beijing, representatives from the People’s Bank of China noted that HarmonyOS NEXT will provide new capabilities for monitoring e-CNY usage, raising privacy concerns. According to the South China Morning Post, government officials who receive salaries in digital yuan often convert it to cash quickly due to surveillance fears. Integrating e-CNY into HarmonyOS NEXT illustrates how China combines technological innovation with digital asset oversight.
