Romania became the first European country to use blockchain to track voter turnout and election results. During the first round of the presidential elections on November 24, the country implemented advanced technologies to ensure transparency and security in the voting process.

Using Blockchain Technology for Election Monitoring

Romania’s electoral authority, Romania Autoritatea Electorală Permanentă (ROAP), used blockchain to record data on voter turnout and election results in real-time. Voters could connect to the European Blockchain Services Infrastructure (EBSI) and track the progress of the elections via a dedicated dashboard. This innovative solution was proposed by the Special Telecommunications Service (STS) to enhance data reliability and prevent fraud.

Security and Transparency through Blockchain

Data collected at polling stations was recorded on the blockchain as transactions containing both public information and a hash of private data, ensuring its confidentiality. The EBSI network, which includes nodes in government bodies and academic institutions across 27 EU countries, added an additional layer of security and transparency. This solution ensured that the election results would not be subject to manipulation.
